Ontario

Ontario’s annual Universal Influenza Immunization Program (UIIP), now entering its twelfth year, offers free flu shots to anyone living and working in Ontario aged 6 months and older with a valid health card. The program is widely accessible across the province through doctors’ offices, employer-sponsored clinics, public health units, local pharmacies, hospitals, long-term care homes, Family Health Teams, Community Health Centres and Community Care Access Centres.

In a recent study of UIIP, released by the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES), Ontario’s model helped deliver positive results for the health of Ontarians and for the health system in general annually, preventing 300 influenza related deaths, 1000 hospitalizations, 30,000 visits to the emergency department and 200,000 visits to doctors’ offices.
